July 4th, 2007 Dealing with the "dead moose" at Gap Inc.
Given Melcrum's recent study into managing change communication, one of my favorite sessions at IABC 2007 last week covered a transition that Gap Inc. went through when outsourcing an element of its IT operation. As with most outsourcing decisions, there were tough times for both employees affected by the change and leaders trying to manage it effectively. The session shared the successful communication strategy behind the change program. But a small detail that stood out for me was a description of the "Moose Sessions" – leadership meetings introduced by the CEO where leaders were encouraged to address the "dead moose in the room". An actual fluffy toy moose featured as a prop, a visual cue for leaders to talk about the uncomfortable issues that everyone was aware of but no one liked to raise. The Moose Sessions were a smart way to get some of the really tricky change issues out on the table, giving everyone a chance to discuss them, decide what to do about them and move on. Simple, but apparently very effective. Would this work in your organization? Share your thoughts on the Melcrum blog. And look out for the full case study on change at Gap Inc. in a forthcoming issue of Strategic Communication Management. Advertisement
