August 15th, 2007 Research reveals ideal home for internal comms

A debate around the perfect reporting line for internal comms within the business emerged once again on Melcrum's online discussion forum, prompted by the following comment:

"Internal communications currently reports into HR but we're discussing moving it to the Corporate Communication team so that there is a unified message externally and internally."

How does this compare to the situation within your own organization?

According to The Pulse, Melcrum's 2006-07 research into internal communication budgets, salaries and trends, there's been a steady trend for the internal communication function to be placed within corporate communication.

Online global survey
The online survey completed by over 1,000 communicators worldwide found that:

  • 44% of respondents said their internal comms function sits within corporate comms (compared with only 28% in 2003)
  • 18% of respondents said their internal comms function reported into HR

An area becoming increasingly less popular for housing internal communication is the PR/Public affairs department, down from 15% in 2003 to 8% in 2006.

You can find out more about the structure of internal communication functions in a free chapter from the full report.

See you next week.
